it's July, that month when a young man's fancy turns toward self-promotion. Or finagling promotion out of other people.
So, yeah, I'm doing quite a lot (by my standards, anyway) of self-promo stuff lately. I feel especially icky about it since this comes on the heels of a long period of desultory blog updates. But this is a busy month! Starting most especially with yesterday's very exciting UK debut of Bitter Seeds. It feels very meta to me, the way these fictional characters have made it back to their real-world home.
I suppose I should also mention that I finally joined Twitter (@ITregillis). See what I mean about me being hilariously inept at self-promo and social networking? 2 weeks passed before I realized I should mention it.
And three nights ago I did a really fun podcast interview with Brad and Greg from Speculate!
I've known Brad Beaulieu for quite a while, going back to our early days on the Online Writing Workshop. Greg I've known only by reputation, and as a voice in the Speculate! podcasts. So it was a blast when they invited me to have a chat for their 50th episode. (50! Wow! Great job, guys!)
As I warned them before we started, I talk with my hands. A LOT. Even when I'm by myself and the other people are a thousand miles away. So I bumped the microphone about a dozen times during this interview. But they were really good sports and put up with my constantly messing up the sound quality, not to mention my long rambling discursive answers.
And speaking of talking with my hands while giving long rambling discursive answers, I'll be doing more of that tonight when I visit the Albuquerque Science Fiction Society's monthly meeting. These are the amazing folks who put on Bubonicon every year, one of the best small conventions in the country. It's a great group—friendly, welcoming, and unfailingly supportive of local writers. I'll do my best to be a good guest for them. I might do a reading from The Coldest War, depending on the group's interests. I might even mention this review which just popped up on Twitter while I was writing this post.
And speaking of The Coldest War: Just 4 days to go before it hits shelves on July 17! #soexcitedIcan'twait
The day after that, on July 18, I'll be participating in the next #TorChat on Twitter with Alex Bledsoe and D. B. Jackson.

If you haven't yet seen the review on Tor.com, navigate that direction soon. I think you'll be pleased. It's always pleasant to encounter an articulate adult who's reduced to bouncing up and down and squeeing frantically.
Have a happy release date. I'll be acquiring my copy then, but I won't be reading it until the following week, when my husband is attending a professional conference. Then I won't, you know, have to make conversation or dinner or anything. Until I'm done reading.

I'm usually pretty psycho about avoiding reviews, but I figured something book-related had happened because my Twitter whatchamathingy (still haven't mastered the jargon) got a little busy for a brief period this morning.

Here's a bonus--I fully intend to get a hard copy of The Coldest War just as soon as it is out, so you can restore a piece of your soul. ;-)
I would guess that you are right in that there isn't a huge overlap between people who usually get audiobooks and people who usually get the hard cover.
That is incredibly kind of you, Steve! But I hope you don't feel cajoled into buying a copy just because of my whining on the Speculate podcast :) Honestly, that wasn't my intent. I did a very poor job of that particular answer.
I'm genuinely happy that folks are reading the book, no matter what format they choose!
Ah, no need to be worried. For me, the audio book was an interesting experiment (and early peek). I've always intended on getting the book--the main course so to speak.
I didn't think it was possible for me to be even more impressed with your generosity. Clearly I was wrong!
