Praise for the
Milkweed Triptych
"A major talent... I can't wait to see more."
—George R. R. Martin
"Mad English warlocks battling twisted Nazi psychics? Yes please, thank you. Tregillis's debut has a white-knuckle plot, beautiful descriptions, and complex characters-- an unstoppable Vickers of a novel."
Cory Doctorow on Bitter Seeds
"Ian Tregillis triumphantly concludes his astonishing, brilliant, pulse-pounding debut trilogy, The Milkweed Triptych."
Cory Doctorow on Necessary Evil
"Tregillis' conclusion of the Milkweed Triptych is the pièce de résistance of the series. Necessary Evil is a perfect marriage of science fiction, fantasy and alternate history."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on Necessary Evil
"Darkly fascinating…A thoroughly fascinating conclusion to an imaginative tour de force."
Kirkus on Necessary Evil
"A cross between the devious, character-driven spy fiction of early John le Carré and the mad science fantasy of the X-Men... Despite the jaw-dropping backdrop and oblique plotting, the narrative is driven by character and personal circumstance...
Grim indeed, yet eloquent and utterly compelling."
—Kirkus on The Coldest War
"The characters come alive via [Tregillis's] imaginative dialogue and his storyline will keep readers spellbound and on the edge of their seats with an intense sci-fi/alternate history thriller plot."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on The Coldest War
"Well-drawn characters and a feel for time and place make this an excellent journey into an alternate Britain."
—Library Journal on Bitter Seeds
"Engrossing... Tregillis ably mixes cold war paranoia with his mythology."

Santa Fe: Gateway to the Stars
Saturday, September 24 2011, 07:59 PM

So, Val Kilmer ogled a friend of mine at the (tiny) Santa Fe airport today.

Well, okay.  It wasn't really ogling.  There was nothing creepy about it.  I guess it was more of a curious glance.  But it was definitely directed at Melinda, or at least her toenail polish, and it was definitely definitely Val Kilmer.

I thought that was pretty neat.  Melinda, who apparently has never seen Real Genius, didn't quite seem to appreciate the magnitude of the occasion.  I (who totally cannot quote scenes from that movie by heart) was more excited about it.

It's hard for me to imagine how strange and, well, intrusive it must be when you're easily recognized by so many people.  At least I didn't make a big deal about it like the baggage claim guy, who made a point of welcoming new arrivals by loudly mentioning there was a "famous movie star" in the airport.  I don't blame Kilmer for heading straight out of the terminal and through The Doors to where his ride waited.  (See what I did there?)

That's my only encounter with a Hollywood celebrity here in the Land of Enchantment so far.  But it's appropriate that it should be Val Kilmer; he was, allegedly, planning to run for governor at one point.  Coming from the state that put Jesse "The Body" Ventura in its governor's mansion, that wouldn't faze me in the least.

Somehow I missed that critical piece of the Kilmer oeuvre!

I am insanely jealous. Val Kilmer is one of my favorites--ever since my crush on him as Iceman in TOP GUN and my dad's insistence that we watch THUNDERHEART over and over again (he works with a lot of reservations--my dad, not Val...though maybe Val does too). Plus, I must watch Val Kilmer at least once a month in TOP SECRET. Either that title is a favorite here in Germany or the rights to play it are really cheap.

Tell your friend Melinda that she now has bragging rights for the rest of her life.

Wow, I forgot all about TOP SECRET. There was a period in high school when we rented that (back in the days of VHS rentals) all the time. I'm delighted to think it's getting so much airtime, and in Germany, of all places.

Tell your friend Melinda that she now has bragging rights for the rest of her life.

That's exactly what I told her. She didn't seem to believe me.
